Wood – The Comeback

timberWood has long been replaced by steel and concrete in the construction business due to the previous costs associated with it’s use. But there is a revival on the use of wood as the framing material of choice mainly due to the recession that has raised the prices of steel and many of the other materials used in today’s modern buildings making wood a better choice. Wood is today cheaper than steel even with the strength difference and new insight into the true ability of wood has been causing a stir in many construction industry circles. In some US states, wood is making a comeback as the material of choice for framing making the costs of building a home or other structure cheaper than it’s modern counterparts. There is however a lot of restrictions when using wood, first of which is that it can only be used as framing material for buildings that are no more than five stories high.
The old wisdom of using wood has been called upon again to take up the gap that high cost has left in the world of construction and who wouldn’t. Wood as a building material is strong, yet flexible enough to stand the test of time. With proper technique and design it can last a lifetime, afterwhich it can again be torn down and the wood re-used for some other purpose.
